All Care volunteer makes life special for Bertram House resident
Swampscott Reporter / January 17, 2008
For many, the first days of the New Year are all about making New Year's Resolutions — working out, eating better, spending more time with family and friends. But it's also a good time to take a look at the year ahead and consider giving back to the community, the All Care Hospice and its staff believe.
Whether once a week, once a month or once in a while, volunteers can make a real difference. Volunteering allows people to serve friends and neighbors in and experience both personal growth and emotional fulfillment at the same time, they add.
Maureen Saltman of Lynn has been volunteering with All Care Hospice for more than a year. She chose to become a hospice volunteer after one of her closest friends passed away from breast cancer at a young age on hospice services.
Saltman wanted to put her energy and time into a cause she believes in. She also hopes to show her young children by example the importance and necessity of taking time to help others.
Maureen’s first and present patient, Barbara Betts, has been with All Care nearly the same amount of time. Whether it is timing, fate or luck of the draw, the two have formed a true bond that continues to build with each visit. Most afternoons are spent doing a life review, and viewing family photos and old letters. An avid outdoor lover, Barbara also enjoys looking through nature books.
The past few months have been particularly special for both women. Residents of the Bertram House in Swampscott decorate their doorways with individual shadow boxes. Drawing from Barbara’s impressive life story, Maureen created a box symbolizing Barbara’s accomplishments, passions and hobbies. This small gesture now connects Barbara with the other residents of the home.
More recently, as the holiday décor brought a festive atmosphere throughout the assisted living facility, Maureen decorated Barbara’s room. This gesture granted Barbara’s wish for her own personal Christmas tree. The tree, adorned with a variety of ornaments, sits atop Barbara’s desk where she may view it regularly.
The supportive and compassionate friendship between the two women exemplifies the connection volunteers make with patients. While there are many people helping All Care Hospice, even more are needed.
